I started work in a cookie factory about 2 months ago and after starting there I found out a few things that didn't impress me. The first is,the crew and myself work anywhere up to 11 hours a day with only a half hour break all day, is this allowed? The second thing is we don't get overtime until we work 40 hours and when we work on Saturdays we still don't get paid penalty rates and that includes Sundays. Is this allowed and if so how is that possible? Craig |
On eight hour shifts they only need to give you half an hour, but on 11 hours you are entitled to at least another half hour. Overtime should be paid for all weekend work and all work which extends over the allotted shift time. The National Union of Workers covers the industry under the Pastrycooks Award. This allows long shifts but specifies breaks and allowances. Overtime should begin after 40 hours under this award.
