I was reading up on the Shop Employees State award on the DIR site and it mentions an award for shop Would this rate apply because I am manager of my own department or because of my age am I restricted to junior shop assistant rates? I suppose what I am really asking is: does the junior shop assistant rate apply to any employee under 21 accordingly, or should it apply to those employees with junior duties only? Mark |

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has recently completed a junior rates inquiry and union input to that and consistent policy on junior rates has been that the rates should be based on skills and the job being done rather than age (that equal pay for work of equal value). Labor Council submission to that is at http://lcnsw.labor.net.au/papers/junior.html
Unfortunately employers and the fed govt don't agree and see the cheap option as the best one (surprise surprise). So yes you get paid by age under the Shop Employees Award rather than skill until you are 21. The only exceptions that I know of are apprenticeships in the skilled trades (carpenters, mechanics etc etc) where the apprenticeship rates up each level of the course. Tends to be low anyway of course but I think exceed adult minimum rates by about the 3rd year. There a re very few apprenticeships around of course. There are training wage awards in some industries too which have a similar objective but the rates are low.
