Not sure about your rights at work? - Ask Neale

question

What are the physical hazards of the modern computer-based workplace?

Tony

answer

Problem areas would include:

eye strain, inadequate lighting, repetitive strain injury (tendonititis), excessive hours without a break, poor air conditioning, space at and around workstations, radiation, lack of ventilation around photocopiers.

The Victorian Workcover Authority has released a web resource on OHS issues arising from working with computers

The resource covers issues regarding screens, peripherals, desks and workbenches and office seating. The risks from screens figure significantly and the resource covers radiation, as well as pregnancy, epilepsy, and eye-related problems.

For electro magnetic radiation try http://www.emrnetwork.org/ and http://ssec.org.au/emraa/

Stress levels are on the rise. Try the ACTU website for info on this. They have lots of stuff on stress and long hours etc at http://www.actu.asn.au
