Not sure about your rights at work? - Ask Neale

question

I left full-time work a couple of years ago to go back to Uni. I used to be in a Super Fund at work but have now lost track of it - can I still access my funds and transfer into a new fund?

Mark

answer

Yes the contributions you or your employer made are still out there. Administration fees will have been deducted if the amount in your fund account is over $1,000.00. The law now preserves accounts below that amount so that the account does not disappear in admin charges. If you know what the fund's name was you should be able to contact them about the account in your name and apply to have it transferred to a another one if you are making contributions elsewhere.

As you don't seem to be in contact with the fund, you have probably been classified as a lost member which also ensures that your account is protected from erosion by administrative charges.

Transfer of lost member funds to a new super fund is covered by federal superannuation legislation which requires the fund which is tranferring your account to the fund where you have a new account to provide all information necessary to identify the account holder.
