Working Students Union Network at O-Week 2006

22 February 2006

The Working Students Union Network (WSUN) is at university O-Weeks in 2006. This year WSUN will be focusing on the Your Rights at Work campaign on campus.

Sadly, students are to be greatly affected following the passing of the Federal Government's WorkChoices legislation. Despite this fact, students are not largely aware that these changes are taking place. Students will be now be facing:
· Workplaces that will not pay penalty rates for weekend and night work.
· A lower minimum wage set by Government appointees.
· No unfair dismissal protection.
· Having to take a case of sexual, religious or racist discrimination to the Federal Supreme Court (costing you between $10 000 and $30 000).
· Having to work longer hours for the same, or even lower rate of pay.

To address students' lack of awareness of the new workplace changes, WSUN activists are committed to helping students become informed.

At O-Week, students will also have the opportunity to have their say on problems that they had, or are having at work. While many students face problems in the workplace, most will never do anything about it. Furthermore, most students do not know that unions are the only organisations that can genuinely empower workers to improve their working conditions, and therefore their lives. At O-Week, all students will have the chance to tell their stories, and let WSUN know, what problems students are facing in the workplace.
