Working Students Union Launch at Sydney Uni

CNNNN and John Robertson to launch Network

16 February 2004

Students and unions are combining forces to launch a student union network on University campuses this year.

During Orientation Week on Wednesday 3rd March CNNNN and the Secretary of the Labor Council, John Robertson, will be talking about the Network.

On Thursday 4th March, the Labor Council will participate in a forum with the National Union of Students.

The forum is about the Crisis in Education, and how students are struggling to afford to go to University.

John Roberston will talk about how poor rates of pay and vulnerable employment make it difficult for students to access education. He will argue to make education more accessible requires students to both campaign against education fees on campus, and to fight for better conditions and pay at work.
Each of these campaigns requires students to combine forces and act collectively.

Unions are essential for improving conditions at work. Unionists get paid better wages and have greater job security.

The Working Students Union Network has produced a Rights at Work Booklet to help educate students about their rights at work. It will be distributed on campuses during Orientation week.

To get a copy either contact your Network on campus, the SRC or email the Labor Council and we can send it to you. Email workingstudents@labor.org.au.
