questions

Why should I join a trade union?

questions

The main role of a trade union is to represent and provide services for workers and their families. Unions assist their members in many ways. They assist their members when they are having trouble at work, they negotiate with the employers for better pay and conditions, and they offer insurance and loan advice and many other services.

Workplace studies over many years have consistently found that the wages and conditions of Australian workers at a workplace that is organised and collectively represented by a trade union employed are better than those working in unorganised work sites.

You should join a trade union to help protect and improve your working conditions. Most conditions that workers in Australia currently have like paid sick and annual leave were won by trade unions representing members as a collective and negotiating with employers to improve working conditions and win wage rises on behalf of members.

To find out more about the benefits of joining a union, or to find out which union covers your workplace contact the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223.

If you want to know more about your rights at work call the Unions Helpline 1300 362 223
