An employee is not obliged to inform his/her employer if they join a union. The Workplace Relations Act 1995 has a freedom of association clause to allow employees the freedom to be a member of a trade union. An employer cannot dismiss an employee for being a member of a trade union because to do so would be a breech of the Equal Opportunities Act / Anti-discrimination Act which state that an employer cannot discriminate on the basis of political belief.
