The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the only peak council and national centre representing the Australian workforce.
The ACTU is made up of 46 affiliated unions representing around 1.8 million workers. There is a branch of the ACTU in each state. These are generally called Labor Councils.
The ACTU is able to speak on behalf of all workers including those in manufacturing, finance, government and the service sector generally. It includes trades, sales, clerical, technical and professional workers amongst its affiliated union membership.
ACTU policies and the most important operational decisions are established through democratic processes, which involve:
- An Executive of around 50 people meets three times a year.
- A Congress of around 800 delegates representing all ACTU affiliates is held
every three years.
