Both apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid work with structured training. An apprenticeship can take up to four years to complete, while traineeships are usually twelve months but can vary up to two years for higher level qualifications. Both involve a formal contract of training or training agreement.
Apprenticeships are more common in areas such as building and construction, manufacturing and electrical trades, as well as occupations such as chefs and hairdressers. Traineeships are more common in industries such as retail and hospitality, business services, information technology and community services.
