questions

I applied and got a job with a local employer. After I started work, I was told to sign some documents telling me I was a trainee. Even though I’ve already got experience working in the same job before, I’m now being paid less wages. Can they do this?

questions

A traineeship should generally only be for training employees who are not already experienced in the same job.

Under the National Training Wage Award, training wages can not apply if you are regarded as already competent in a traineeship area.

If you don’t have a formal qualification and only some of the skills, you can ask the employer and registered training organisation to have your skills assessed and recognised so that you don’t have to complete the full traineeship.

If you’re unsure of your rights call your union or if you’re not a member, the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223.
