It is possible to enter a traineeship or apprenticeship if you are an existing worker. However, you should check the type of training required if you already hold the skills you are supposed to get out of the training.
If you think you are already competent in many of the skills you are required to train in, then you should be able to ask to be assessed as competent in these areas. That way, you won’t have to be trained in areas in which you are already proficient, yet you should still be able to get a formal qualification stating that you hold skills and competencies in that area.
If you are an existing worker (other than a casual) with the same employer before undertaking a traineeship, the National Training Wage Award says that you have to be paid the same wages you would ordinarily have received if you weren’t in training. That is, you should not have your wages reduced. The same happens with most apprenticeships, but you need to check the award that covers you.
If you were already employed prior to entering a training agreement and the agreement is terminated during its life, you should have the right to return to your previous position. However, because different laws apply federally and in various states, you need to check what your exact rights are.
Contact your union if you’re a member or call the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223. Alternately, contact your state or territory training authority.
