When you sign a traineeship or apprenticeship you are signing a formal training agreement or contract of training that spells out your rights and obligations in undertaking training with your employer.
Part of your training agreement is a requirement that a written training plan be drawn up between your employer and registered training organisation eg, TAFE and agreed with yourself. The training plan is then required to be provided to the state training authority when the agreement is registered.
If there is any dispute about training being delivered or not delivered, you can always go back to the agreement spelt out in the training plan about what you are entitled to.
If you think you are already competent in the areas you are being trained in but you still have some time to go under your traineeship or apprenticeship you can also ask your registered training organisation to assess you earlier.
If there is agreement between yourself, the training organisation and the employer you can then apply to the state or territory training authority to obtain your qualification earlier.
If there is any dispute about this, you should contact your union if you’re a union member. Alternately contact the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223. You can also seek advice from your state or territory training authority.
