Wage rates for trainees are generally set by the National Training Wage Award or state equivalent. This sets out rates of pay for full-time, part-time and school-based traineeships.
Rates apply depending on the year of schooling completed, length of time out of school and the skill level of the traineeship. Conditions of employment are then set by the award or agreement which would otherwise apply to an employee who is not a trainee in the same industry or occupation.
If you’re an apprentice, your wages and conditions are set by the industry award or agreement that applies to the industry or workplace in which you are employed in. Apprentices normally earn a percentage of what is called the base tradesperson’s rate of pay in the award. This is the rate of pay they will receive as a minimum when they complete their qualification and gain their trade certificate.
