In Australia, chemicals at work are classified as either hazardous substances or dangerous goods according to their health and safety hazards.
Chemicals are classified as hazardous substances if exposure to them can cause health effects - such as skin rashes, dermatitis, asthma, cancer or other illnesses.
Chemicals are classified as dangerous goods on the basis of immediate physical or chemical effects such as fire, explosion or corrosion.
The majority of chemicals classified as dangerous goods can also be classified as hazardous substances.
Hazardous substances and dangerous goods are covered by separate legislation in the states and territories. Check with your state/territory Occupational Health and Safety Authority and/or Dangerous Goods Authority.
