ACTU surveys of workers have found that up to 88% use chemicals at work. If you use chemicals at work, your employer is required by law to supply you and other workers with information about the chemicals and training in their ‘safe’ use. The first sources of information about chemicals are 1) the labels on the containers, which by law must provide basic health and safety information, and 2) the material safety data sheets (MSDS), which provide more detailed health and safety information. You should obtain a MSDS from your employer.
For more information on chemicals and the laws in your state or territory, contact your union, the state trades and labour council or the ACTU Helpline 1300 362 223.
