Unions and workers have been lobbying governments and employers for years to ban killer chemicals from workplaces, for the use of safer alternatives, and for safer work practices when using chemicals. The total ban on the use of asbestos in Australia is due to union action in the workplace and at the government level.
Despite continuing damage to the health of workers, many employers still do not comply with chemical safety requirements and governments have been slow to ban harmful chemicals from the workplace, even when the dangers are well known.
