Casual employment does not offer the same protection as a permanent job. Casual workers are not usually entitled to benefits such as paid holidays, paid sick leave or public holidays but they do receive a 'loading' on top of the rate for permanent workers. This is designed to compensate for missing out on sick leave, holiday pay and other benefits.
Part-time employees may be permanent or casual and will generally receive the permanent or casual conditions of employment pro-rated for the number of hours worked.
Temporary employees are often employed for a specific time period to complete a particular project or to replace employees absent on leave. They generally accrue entitlements such as annual and sick leave on a pro-rata basis.
Employment status and the type of contract of employment will determine whether or not you have access to unfair dismissal provisions in the event that you are dismissed.
To be sure and to help in clarifying your employment status contact your union. If you are not in a union or are unsure of how to contact them call the Australian Council of Trade Unions of 1300 362 223
