I make no secret of the fact that I am gay. This has no bearing on the work I do but other people seem to think I am a bit of a joke or that it is good justification to play “practical jokes” and generally “have a bit of a go”. Do I have to put up with this?

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is illegal in Australia. You can not be discriminated against in the workplace (or anywhere else) because of your sexual orientation, whether you are single or in a relationship.

All Australian couples, regardless of gender or marital status, have equal rights under the law.
