There may be a number of reasons why one worker will receive more than another, some of then legitimate, others not!
Awards and Agreements covering workers usually have different rates of pay for various jobs or classifications and in many cases for years of service in a job. If your mate is paid under a different classification or service increment he or she may be paid differently.
It may also be that you are being under paid. After checking your facts, contact your union. If you are not a union member contact the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223. Don't forget you have rights. If your employer is underpaying you they are breaking the law. As an individual you can write to your employer stating that you believe you have been underpaid. It is important to give details remembering to tell your employer what you expect them to do. Put everything in writing and keep a copy. If you are being underpaid, it's highly likely that others you work with are also being underpaid. Joining a union and acting together will give you more protection and usually a much better result.
