Depending on the award or industrial agreement in place, your employer may be able to pay you cash. However, there is a requirement to give you an adequate pay slip detailing, amongst other things, the employers and your name, classification, the ordinary hourly rate, the hours worked, allowances paid, deduction details, including superannuation and the amount of tax deducted.
There is no guarantee that your boss will not report to the Australian Taxation Office your income at a later date. You have an obligation to declare income when you do a taxation return. Provided you declare your income, you can not get into trouble.
If you are being paid in cash, it's most likely that the amount you are being paid is less than that required by the law. Contact your union or the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223.
