No. Casuals have rights. Casuals traditionally do not have long-term employment. However, in many cases this is no longer the case, particularly for casuals employed on a regular basis for more than 6 or 12 months. In some cases casuals have the right to convert to ongoing part or full-time employment and have protection from unfair termination.
Casuals are usually entitled to extra pay of between 17% - 33%. This is called the casual loading and is designed to compensate casuals for, amongst other things, the lack of pay received for annual leave, sick leave, termination pay. Casuals may, in certain circumstances, have their hours changed or be terminated with minimal rights. In other circumstances casuals have many rights. Some of these will be found in awards or agreements, in other cases it will be the common law. If in doubt contact your union or the ACTU Helpline on 1300 362 223.
