No money for sacked Impulse workersDate: 24 May 2001
Impulse boss Gerry McGowan has secured a large payout for himself but neglected to ensure his former Impulse staff received reasonable redundancy payouts, according to the Australian Services Union. Australian Services Union (ASU) acting Branch Secretary Mary-Anne O'Neill said the union had sought a four week redundancy payment for all Impulse staff in Queensland, which Impulse contractor Capricorn Air Services refused to provide. Capricorn Air Services provided all Impulse services in Queensland, including staff and capital equipment. "These workers were sacked with a moment's notice from a company they worked tirelessly to establish, and were offered nothing more than the payment of their entitlements such as holiday leave," Ms O'Neill said. "If Qantas is going to fail to meet its moral obligation to employ these workers than they should at least provide a reasonable redundancy package for the former Impulse employees," she said. "Our request for a fair redundancy payout is completely in line with industry norms, particularly given the lucrative deal Mr McGowan did with Qantas," she said. "In a letter to the union Capricorn Air Services refused to provide four weeks redundancy payment, which is a disappointing position for them to take," she said.
