Telstra-More jobs to go.

Date: 29 June 2003

It is clear, apart from the current redundancies taking place over the next few weeks, that Telstra's corporate managers have plans for further rounds of redundancies beyond these.
This formula is a simple one. You increase productivity-you help to work yourself or your mates out of a job!

With regard to the current redundancies, CEPU are/have been currently engaged in negotiations with management over dozens of redundancies across Telstra Technologies, Metro and Country Service, Telstra Research Laboratories and other areas trying to force management to justify the redundancies, trying to ensure fair and objective selection processes and if all else fails in trying to assist displaced members get new jobs.

In regard to the longer-term "downsizing" we are using all means at our disposal (political, public exposure and legal) to fight against management plans. We are organising members take part in a range of activities to try and protect jobs.

Corporate management, it appears to us, is hell bent on a course, which will run down what has been one of the best Telco's in the world. They appear to be stupid enough to continue to believe that ongoing staff reductions will lift the share price and make the company more competitive.

What in fact will happen is the company becoming less competitive because of the diminished capacity to provide service and this will ultimately lead to loss of business and profits. Ultimately the share price will continue to stagnate and fall.
