Council Workers to Rally TodayDate: 02 July 2003
On Wednesday 2nd July workers from Yarrowlumla Council in Queanbeyan are descending on NSW Parliament House in Macquarie St at 12 noon to protest against the Government's failure to protect jobs and conditions following amalgamations and boundary changes. The workers voted at a mass meeting yesterday (Monday) and will travel by bus, meeting up with other USU members to protest against the Government. "The workers are asking for a fair go in the face of amalgamations or boundary changes. Last week the Government released a statement saying they had approved legislation that would protect the workers, when in fact the legislation that they are trying to push through will actually reduce the standards of work protection," said USU Secretary Brian Harris. The United Services Union is concerned that the government legislation may also be used against workers who recently transferred from Leichhardt and South Sydney Councils to the Sydney City Council. "We call on the Minister for Local Government Tony Kelly to protect local government workers and rural communities where local government is a major employer."
