One.Tel workers deserve supportDate: 03 June 2001
Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations Arch Bevis called on Workplace Relations Minister Tony Abbott to support an application for a safety net award to be made for employees of the troubled telecommunications company One.Tel. Mr Bevis was commenting on the application by the Community and Public Sector Union to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission for a safety net award that would provide One.Tel employees with redundancy entitlements. "Employees of One.Tel are entitled to the same sort of consideration as the employees of HiH who were successful in obtaining a similar type of award a few weeks ago. As minister, Mr Abbott has the discretion to direct his department to appear in the commission to support the application by the union. "This is an opportunity for the Government to do something positive to assist One.Tel employees to obtain some redundancy entitlements in the event that the company is wound up. Through no fault of their own these workers are facing a very uncertain future, to support their application for redundancy entitlements is the least that Mr Abbott and the Government can do. "I call on Tony Abbott to show some concern for the situation that the One.Tel employees have found themselves in and to support this application for a safety net award", said Mr Bevis.
