'Telstra/Foxtel see the light.'
Date: 10 December 2003
The Sub Contractors who perform Cable TV and Broadband work for Telstra/Foxtel have recently broken through with a successful campaign to improve their lot.
The Sub Contractors, over 90% of whom are members of the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU), had been out on strike for about 10 days, to fight for a better deal.
Led by the CEPU, the Sub Contractors strike, (which ended on Tuesday 9th December) coupled with strategic demonstrations and 'van blockades' has been successful. It achieved:
A significant increase in paid rates
A major reduction in 'penalties' against Sub Contractors.
A shifting of other costs (e.g. capital works costs) from the subbies to the companies
A satisfactory response to the Sub Contractors detailed log of claims dealing with Occ. Health & Safety, weekend work reduction, better co-ordination of tickets of work, better backup support for the individual Subbie when performing work, and lower material costs etc.
The establishment of a proper regular consultative process between the Sub Contractors and the companies.
Further, there will be negotiations with the CEPU this week, to produce fair contracts between the individual Sub Contactors and the companies, rather than the 'take it or leave it' approach of previous years.
This represents a great outcome for the Telstra/Foxtel Sub Contractors. As individuals they were, in effect, like 'slave labour'. Collectively organised through the CEPU, they have won better treatment and dignity.
CEPU congratulates the Sub Contractors' own campaign and negotiating committee on their commitment, determination and skills, ingredients which have been decisive in this success.
Already, Sub Contractors from various other walks of life are contacting CEPU for support. That's part of what we are here for.
DON'T GO TO WORK WITHOUT THE UNION!
