A Barbeque Stopper?Date: 15 April 2004
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth is Mr Howard! The Australian Services Union has called on the Prime Minister John Howard to urgently intervene in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission tomorrow, 16 April 2004, to assist a single mother of three maintain her part time position with Salmat, a large employer in a Contract Call Centre in Wagga. According to ASU Executive President Michael Want it's time Mr Howard assisted families rather then just talk about it at BBQs. "Mr Howard reckons the issue of balancing work and family is the biggest ongoing social debate of our time and is a real barbeque stopper," said Michael Want. "Well, he has the chance to act on behalf of a single mum with three children trying to balance family responsibilities with her work - and I ask him to intervene urgently to stop Ms Martin being forced out of her job." Since joining Salmet Ms Martin has been working 30 hours per week Monday to Friday. These hours were agreed by previous management because of Ms Martin's family needs, however the Manager at Salmat Mr Peter McIntyre has now unilaterally changed Ms Martin's hours, which will force her to resign from her position at Salmat because her new roster would leave her three children at home without support. "How can anyone say this is family friendly?" asked Mr Want. The Union has made an application to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission to have Ms Martin's hours and days maintained. "This is John Howard's chance to show his commitment to friendly workplace policy. He could have the Government intervene before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission," said Mr Want. "The government has intervened on behalf of employers - how about they do the same for this single mum and put a submission for Ms Martin's hours and days that were agreed on when she commenced employment with Salmat?" "Ms Martin is endeavouring in very difficult circumstances to raise three children by herself and work a part time position to improve her family's living standards. As the management at Salmat have refused to listen, the Prime Minister must intervene," said Michael Want. Ms Martin will be addressing the NSW Labor Council meeting tonight seeking support for her family friendly hours to be maintained.
