Workers Win Wage Increase

Date: 12 July 2004

Workers throughout NSW are $19 per week better off following a win by the United Services Union in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission on July 2nd 2004.

The USU applied for the flow on of the State Wage Case for clerical workers in the private sector covered by the Clerical and Admin (State) Award. The increase also applies to clerical and administrative staff working in legal, accountants and real estate offices along with those working in medical centres, media outlets and taxi co-operatives.

According to USU Executive President Michael Want this is a substantial increase for workers and importantly maintains protection for those covered by Awards.

"By maintaining Awards at a reasonable level we are protecting vulnerable workers who are not in a position to bargain for a Collective Agreement," said Michael Want. "It means these workers receive increases in their incomes and are protected by Award conditions."

Michael Want also said that a stronger Award meant a better launching pad for bargaining at the workplace.

The Union has commenced a campaign to ensure that workers across NSW, and in particular in regional areas, are aware of the Award increase. The wage increase is effective from the first full pay period commencing on or after 2 July 2004.

"Too many times employees, especially those who work in small offices, are not aware that they are entitled to an increase. It is difficult for an employee to negotiate back pay without the support of their union. Making them aware of the increase when it comes through is vital," said Michael Want.

Employees wanting to find out more about the increase should contact Michael Want at the United Services Union on (02) 9265 8211 or visit the website at www.usu.org.au.
