Call centre closure costs 70 jobsDate: 08 June 2001
Over 70 staff may lose their jobs following Greyhound-McCafferty's decision to close its Brisbane call centre, according to the Australian Services Union. ASU Branch Secretary Julie Bignell said Greyhound-McCafferty's management had today advised of its decision to close the Brisbane call centre, with around 70 staff facing the sack. "The decision to close the Brisbane call centre was made by bean counters in Melbourne unconcerned with the fate of the seventy workers employed there," Ms Bignell said. "Management have indicated that the staff may have jobs at the Toowoomba call centre, but most of these people have families they are unwilling to uproot," she said. "Staff across the company are angry about this decision and will be considering their response in the next few days," she said. "At the very least we expect Greyhound McCafferty's to provide a decent redundancy payout to all affected workers," she said. Ms Bignell said the ASU believes that Greyhound McCafferty's managers had decided to shut the call centre some time ago, but had not advised staff until today. "Just last month McCafferty's tried to reduce the agreed redundancy provisions in the EBA so that sacked workers would get less. This seems like quite a coincidence," she said. The call centre is located at Eagle Farm, and will be closed within a two month period.
