PRIME decision is bad news: CPSU

Date: 08 June 2001

The CPSU Communications Union today condemned PRIME Television's decision to cut local news in Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle.

The abolition of the news will leave staff facing redundancy and viewers with less choice of local news.
The CPSU has already commenced a campaign gaining support from local politicians to lobby PRIME television to maintain local news.
CPSU spokesperson, Paul Ingwersen, said "PRIME failed to consult with staff or the community. With these closures, 23 jobs will be lost, along with an important news service for each of the communities."
"When PRIME Television shut its local news in Canberra in the early 90's, the community wouldn't cop it. Pressure was applied and the news was re-instated. You would think PRIME had learnt their lesson. The CPSU will do whatever it takes to overturn this short-sighted decision."
