Greyhound McCafferty’s faces strikesDate: 12 June 2001
Over 70 Greyhound McCafferty's staff who are facing the sack will today consider strike action following meetings with management, according to the Australian Services Union. ASU acting Branch Secretary Mary-Anne O'Neill said Greyhound-McCafferty's management had informed staff on Friday of the impending closure of the Brisbane call centre, with around 70 staff facing the sack. "Union representatives are meeting with Tony McCafferty this morning to discuss the arrangements the company has made for staff at the call centre," Ms O'Neill said. "If our members are not satisfied with the outcome of this meeting they will consider taking strike action, particularly if there is no progress on redundancy packages," she said. "Management have indicated that the staff may have jobs at the Toowoomba call centre, but most of these people have families they are unable to uproot," she said. "At the very least we expect Greyhound McCafferty's to provide a decent redundancy payout to all affected workers," she said. Ms O'Neill said the ASU believed that Greyhound McCafferty's managers had decided to shut the call centre some time ago, but had not advised staff until Friday. "Just last month Greyhound McCafferty's tried to reduce the redundancy provisions in the EBA so that sacked workers would get less, which seems like quite a coincidence," she said. The call centre is located at Eagle Farm, and will be closed within a two month period.
