Rail Cuts Hit Shoalhaven Hard

Date: 20 October 2004

A survey of the Shoalhaven community including Nowra and Kiama, has found that 78% of commuters believe that the recent timetable changes including the replacement of late night services with busses has made traveling 'less convenient' and will reduce their ability to access basic services.

The survey was conducted in September by the Shoalhaven Rail Services Committee, which includes Unions Shoalhaven, local business groups, community organizations and civic representatives and was actively supported by the local media.

Key results of the survey include:

·More than half of the respondents rely on rail travel to access health and basic services

·44% of respondents rely on night services

·83% of respondents have listed Sydney as a regular destination

·more than 40% of respondents indicated that they were now "less likely" to use rail services as a result of the service cuts and changes

·One in four respondents identified as having a disability or health issues and many have identified this as affecting their ability to access other modes of transport

The survey also asked non rail users what changes or improvements would make them consider using rail transport. The responses in order of importance are as follows:

1. Reliability of Services
2. Frequency of Trains
3. Cleanliness and General Service levels
4. Safety Issues

Arthur Rorris, South Coast Labour Council Secretary, said;

"The survey proves what the community in the Shoalhaven always suspected, that cuts to rail services have had a major negative impact on public transport use and more importantly have made it harder for many in the region to attend to basic needs such as health, education and employment."
