Alliance scores PRIME deal

Date: 15 June 2001

The Alliance has won the following concessions from Prime Television regarding the redundancy process following the closure of the Wollongong, Newcastle and Canberra news rooms:

  • Voluntary redundancy. If a person from one of the affected newsrooms is willing to work in another Prime news bureau, then voluntary redundancy will be offered to the people in that position in that newsroom. For example, if a camera person in Newcastle is willing to work in Tamworth, then voluntary redundancy will be offered to camera people in the Tamworth newsroom. If a camera person in Tamworth agrees to redundancy, the Newcastle person gets that job.
  • Termination date extended to July 27. This extra three weeks will be available to people who require it to continue looking for alternative employment, both within the Prime Network and elsewhere.
  • If you want to leave now, you can. Affected staff who choose to leave sooner rather than later will be paid up to 8 July, plus receive all their other entitlements.
  • Prime to offer alternative jobs in areas other than newsrooms. If there's another job available in the station that an affected person is prepared to do, Prime will offer that job and provide training in the new skills.
  • Prime to contact competitors to help find jobs for those made redundant. Shirley Brown stated this has already occurred and will continue.
The unions will meet with Prime again on Monday 18 June to discuss the process and clear up any errors in members' termination schedules. If yours looks incorrect, notify Richard Harris at the Alliance office on or rharris@meaa.aust.com. NB: We will only act for financial members.

The hearing yesterday at the Australian Industrial Relations Commission where these concessions were won was an exercise in legal semantics by the company. Affected staff would be astonished to hear the company argue that no-one has been made redundant - it's just that the news services have closed. When pressed by the commissioner, Prime admitted there was 'a "high probability" that some staff would be made redundant. You'd like a horse running with those odds, wouldn't you?

The transcript of proceedings in the Commission will be on their website in about two weeks.
