Merry Christmas You're Sacked!

Date: 21 December 2004

At a time when most Australians are preparing for Christmas and welcoming friends and relatives to vist, St Johns Ambulance employee Jacky West received a visit of an entirely different nature.

With Christmas less then a week away Jacky answered the knock on her door and instead of a happy smile was greeted by a courier delivering her the sack.

Jacky, a single mother with 2 children who has just had her father recently pass away, has been employed by St Johns Ambulance for the past 19 years - 8 years part time and voluntary and 11 years full time.

Over the past 19 years Jacky has worked tirelessly to establish St Johns in the region and has been the recipient of community service awards for her voluntary work. Jacky has been awarded the St Johns Certificate of Merit, Citizen of the Month and is a nominee for Citizen of the Year for Bathurst St Johns Priory vote of thanks. She also has Honour Life Membership for St Johns and has received the Silver Wattle award for outstanding service to Scouting.

"Jacky has demostrated a lifetime commitment to her employer and the community," said United Services Union Executive President Michael Want. "Yet she has been rewarded with redundancy just a few days before Christmas! We've heard of Scrooge employers at Christmas but this is unbelievable."

Jacky was made redundant following a restructure at the St John Ambulance's Bathurst Branch. "This is devastating news for anyone to hear but sending a courier to deliver the sack to someone's house just days before Christmas is unconscionable," said Michael Want.

The United Services Union is pursuing every available option for Jacky.

Jacky West is available for interview.
