Unions Back Walters ContractorsDate: 16 February 2005
The Disputes Committee of the South Coast Labour Council today endorsed bans imposed by contractors on the completion of work at the Sydney Water project in Wollongong in the wake of the Walters collapse. South Coast Labour Council Secretary Arthur Rorris said, "This collapse is affecting hundreds of workers and the small businesses who employ them in the Illawarra." "The contractors have told us that they are prepared to take a stand to recover entitlements for themselves and their workers and we have decided to support their campaign." "The State Government can no longer hide behind contracts with failed companies, it must accept responsibility for the process that led to Walters being awarded the contract in the first place, given that company's recent financial record." "We note the positive role played by Minister Watkins in resolving a similar problem in Paramatta and call on Minister Sartor and the Minister for the Illawarra Mr David Campbell to demonstrate the same level of interest and commitment in resolving this dispute in Wollongong. Resolution Adopted 16 February 2005 That the report be received and it is resolved that bans imposed by contractors on the completion of work at the Sydney Water Project - "Illawarra Waste Water Strategy" in Wollongong, Bellambi and Port Kembla be endorsed and all affiliates be advised accordingly.
