More action over Workers Comp

Date: 21 June 2001

Health Union Gets Behind Workers Comp Bill Protests!

In addition to bans on fare collection on buses, trains and ferries and the issuing of parking infringements by Police, the State's Ambulance Officers have lent their support to the industrial campaign against the proposed Workers Comp legislation with paperwork bans which commenced at 3pm Tuesday.

HREA members in the Ambulance Service imposed paperwork bans from 3pm Tuesday. These bans, which will proceed until further notice, will ban the completion of paperwork required to generate patient accounts for ambulance transports and treatment.

Further, HREA members in public hospitals are also implementing bans on the collection of revenue. These bans may include bans on the collection of parking fees, bans on imposing parking fines and bans on generating patient accounts. The boom gates have already been lifted in several major Sydney hospital car parks.

HREA General Secretary Michael Williamson today said "our members are extremely concerned about this legislation and they are more than happy to get on board with a campaign that is aimed to protect their rights regarding workers compensation."

"It's always hard in the health industry, because the last thing we want to do is disrupt or disadvantage patients or the general public. These bans are aimed firmly at the Government's hip pocket and will have no impact on patient care."

"It's absolutely critical that as unionists, we stand together on this one, and let the Government know that what they are proposing will disadvantage workers, and on that basis - is totally unacceptable."

Mr Williamson concluded that "what is regrettable is that it has had to come to this at all - one would have hoped that cool heads would have prevailed, but the Government has decided to belligerently proceed with this Bill and NSW trade unions have been left with no option other than to oppose it. To do otherwise, would be to betray our members."
