Jupiters boss farewell disrupted

Date: 22 June 2001

FAREWELL FOR JUPITERS CASINO BOSS DISRUPTED BY DISPUTE

Tonight's strike by Jupiters Casino workers will disrupt the Gold Coast send-off function for the chief executive of Jupiters, Richard Barnes.

The 530 tables game staff are walking off the job at Jupiters Casino from 8pm tonight till 8pm Saturday night.

" This is the most profitable night of the week for the Casino and the LHMU members want to make the point that this very profitable company won't make a deal with its workforce.

" In 15 years dealers have not got a pay increase from the company outside of the Living Wage and Safety Net increase," Irene Monro, LHMU Casino Union Queensland Assistant Secretary, said today.

The Jupiters Casino gaming staff are among the lowest paid casino workers in Australia.

" Meanwhile Richard Barnes got a 27% increase between 1999 and 2000.

" In 1999 he earned $750,000 and in 2000 he earned $951,000. While his salary stayed roughly the same his performance bonus increased by 80%!

" LHMU Casino Union members believe that if the company can vote its chief executive a huge performance bonus increase then at least some of the kudos is due to the hard work of the gaming table staff. They too should share in the rewards."

Richard Barnes joined Jupiters in 1983 when construction of the Gold Coast casino began. He became General Manager in 1986 and Managing Director in 1988.

The LHMU proudly represents more than 150,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia.
