Toilet Brush AwardDate: 16 June 2005
The ACT LHMU Cleaners Union has given its annual Toilet Brush Award to a national cleaning company who owes over $2000 to a union member for under payment of wages. Union activists will today attempt to give the Award to Quad Services at their Canberra offices in Bunda St, Civic at midday, LHMU Cleaners Union Secretary, Gil Anderson, said. ACT LHMU officials will also report on the failure of talks last night with the Anglican Bishop of Canberra-Goulburn, George Browning, to ensure Anglican retirement homes only used ethical contact cleaning companies - See below
Annual award on International Justice for Cleaners Day" The union hands out this Award every year as part of its International Justice for Cleaners Day celebrations to to publicise some of the unsavoury employment practices in the ACT Cleaning Industry with a view to eventually stamping them out," Gil Anderson said." We normally have two categories for these awards which are now in their fourth year of competition. " The first is for the contract company who has engaged in poor employment practices and the second is for building owners and managers who have knowingly engaged cleaning companies with poor employment practices. " This year's winning contract cleaning company is Quad Services for the insistence on sub-contracting out work in such away as it results in the underpayment of wages. " This has on occasion occurred without the building owners or managers knowledge.
Victims of sub-contracting" But Quad say that unless the contract specifically prohibits sub-contracting they will continue this practice - obviously Quad services is not a signatory to the ACT Cleaning Industries Code of Best Employment Practice.
The ACT Cleaning Industry Code of Best Employment Practice" We want Quad to make good the $2000 plus owed to Peter Ippolitti one of the victims of the sub-contracting scheme. " The ACT Magistrates Court found that Peter was owed money through one of Quad's sub-contracting schemes but has been unable to recover the money as the sub-contractor has "vanished."
Why the union is not handing out a 2nd toilet award" We think that Quad should pay Peter the money owed, end its sub-contracting ways and sign the Code. After all it is Quad that profits through holding the principle contract for cleaning services," Gil Anderson said." This year we do not have to award the second toilet brush award," Gil Anderson said. " Every building owner and manager we have spoken to in Canberra about the Cleaning Code has agreed to, or is considering, giving preference to cleaning companies that are signatories to the Code. Disappointed with meeting with Anglican Bishop" We are a little disappointed with the meeting that we had yesterday with Anglican Bishop Browning who would not commit to ensuring that Cleaning Award rates were paid to the cleaners at the Anglican nursing homes," Gil Anderson said." We are now going to have to prosecute this matter through the Australian Industrial Relations Commission in addition to the matter we already have with Nationwide Health Services in the Human Rights Office and the unlawful termination that we are also pursuing. " The Bishop could have avoided these troubles and resolved the issue by telling the Anglican retirement homes they should not prefer a cheap price over an ethical cleaning company."
