Ultimatum on Olympic jobs shutdown

Date: 06 April 2000

The persistent rumours that mobile cranes and the deliveries of materials to construction sites would be banned during the staging of the Olympics have forced the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) to issue an ultimatum to the NSW Government to clarify the situation or face massive industrial actions including on Olympic projects.

A mass meeting of union delegates from all over Sydney will meet at 10.30am today (Thursday) to institute bans on all Olympic jobs if the NSW Labor Council and affiliated building unions do not get guarantees building workers will not be unfairly victimised in September.
Up to 20,000 building workers in the CBD alone would face enforced stand downs (without pay) should the bans go ahead in September.
According to CFMEU State Secretary Andrew Ferguson no union is more pro-Olympics than the CFMEU whose members have worked hard to build the Olympic facilities on time and on budget.
Ferguson said: 'The union is not prepared to have up to two thirds of its NSW membership stood down without pay for a month. Our members have families to feed and mortgages to pay.'
