Melb airport guards strikeDate: 22 June 2001
UNION SAYS 'ABSOLUTELY' AT ANSETT TERMINAL - BUT IT'S DIFFERENT FOR QANTAS Security workers at the Qantas domestic and international terminals in Melbourne walked off the job this afternoon for 24 hours as part of an on-going campaign to improve their pay and conditions. Meanwhile security workers employed at the Ansett terminal in Melbourne will meet on Monday morning to hear a report back from LHMU officials on separate negotiations between the union and Group 4 Securitas. " I can say 'Absolutely' that there will be no industrial disputes at Ansett. They can use me in one of their expensive 'Absolutely' TV ads," Terry Breheny, LHMU Security Union Victorian Assistant Secretary, said today. " At this stage I cannot say the same thing about the Qantas terminals in Melbourne because we are not as successful in our talks with Chubb Security and their money-masters at Qantas." The security workers dispute at the Tullamarine airport in Melbourne is now in its second week and does not look like it will be resolved quickly. The LHMU Security Union has coverage for nearly 100 per cent of the Chubb and Group 4 Securitas workers employed at the terminals. The security workers play a vital role in ensuring the safety of all passengers by screening passengers, luggage and cargo at the airport. The guards are among the lowest paid workers at the airport earning as little as $11.86 an hour. The LHMU Security Union is campaigning for a 35 per cent pay rise over three years. The LHMU proudly represents more than 150,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia. For more info: Terry Breheny, LHMU Victorian branch 0425 755 902
