3 Perth workers at the big rally

Date: 30 June 2005

An Aged Care worker, a Casino Croupier and a Chemical worker, three WA LHMU members in Perth, explain why they will be rallying today against John Howard's industrial laws.

Lois Smith works in catering in a Uniting Church aged care home in Bentley

Lois says she is attending the rally against John Howard's work laws because her wages are low, and she doesn't want them to get lower.

"People who support these new laws say that if your skills are in demand, you'll be OK, you'll be able to negotiate higher wages under a less regulated system," Lois Smith explains.

"Well my skills are in demand - aged care is a growth industry and they are always looking for workers, but our wages are very low. I am lucky if I earn $14 an hour. I have to raise a family on that. Under John Howard's new laws things will be much tougher. I am marching for laws to support me, not push me under."

National Week of Action: State-by-State details

Kevin Cann is a croupier at Burswood Casino

"I have worked in an environment where some people are on Australian Workplace Agreements, and others weren't," Kevin Cann talks about his reasons.

" People were paid different rates of pay for doing the same work It was divisive and confusing for all of us, and it made our workplace very negative.

"The Federal Government portrays their laws as the way ahead. My first hand experience is that Australian Workplace Agreements are only put in place so that employers can get the upper hand.

" Burswood Casino are no longer offering workplace agreements, which is good. We don't want to go back to that system. That's why I'm going to the rally."

Richard Searle is Storage and Crane Coordinator at CSBP

"You name the types of agreements on offer, our company has tried them. Workplace Agreements, Enterprise Agreements, co-operation with the Union, war with the Union.

"In my experience, a confident business doesn't need to keep their workforce under the thumb. Why are John Howard and so many employers so intent on getting rid of Unions?"

These and other WA LHMU members are available for comment.
