Sneak Previews of The TakeDate: 05 July 2005
Sneak Previews of Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis' political thriller Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA and the Sydney Social Forum (SFF) proudly present advance screenings of the compelling new documentary The Take, a film by Avi Lewis and best-selling author Naomi Klein (No Logo), at the Chauvel Cinema on Thursday 14 July and Friday 15 July. Canadian director, Avi Lewis will present a Q&A after each screening. Filmed in the wake of Argentina's spectacular economic collapse in 2001, The Take is set to turn the globalisation debate on its head. In the rubble of the country's shattered economy, Lewis and Klein found something growing: a 'do-it-yourself' revolution, a new movement creating concrete alternatives to the global economic model. People were organising into "neighbourhood assemblies", the unemployed formed a "piquetero" movement, factories were being resurrected by their workers and transformed into cooperatives. Peter Jennings, Executive Officer for Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA, believes documentaries are extremely effective tools of communication, "It is reassuring that a documentary such as this aims to sincerely portray the effect of globalisation on the rights of workers", he said. The special advance screenings, featuring a Q & A by director Avi Lewis, will be a great opportunity to support Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA and the Sydney Social Forum in the commitment to social justice and international solidarity. All money raised on the night will go towards Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's vocational educational and skills training programs in developing countries and community education in Australia.
