Young workers Band TogetherDate: 27 November 2005
Young union activists will be attending some of the biggest summer music festivals over the Xmas break to stick it to Little Johnny over his ugly labour laws. “ Young people hate Johnny Howard ‘cause they know these new work laws will rip them off,” Tim Brunero, the Big Brother inmate, who will attend tomorrow’s Band Together launch, said.
Stand up and say: This law sucks“ There is no way a young person wanting a job over the summer – be it in a pub, a shop or at the casino - can hope to negotiate on an equal footing with their potential boss. This law sucks – and we’ve all got to stand up and say so.“ I’m joining the people at one of Australia’s biggest unions – the LHMU – to hand out their orange wrist band to remind people that now’s the time to take a stand for young people’s rights at work,” Tim Brunero said.
Wear the wristbands at work“ Band Together, wear the wristbands at work – and let the boss know where you stand on Rights at Work.”Award-winning fashion designer, Anna Louise Plunkett the designer for Romance Was Born is supporting the Band Together wrist-band campaign. “ Young people now have a cool and fashionable way to identify themselves as actively resistant to the Howard Government’s attack on working rights and wages,” Anna Louise Plunkett said.
Out at Home-Bake and The Big Day outAn army of LHMU activists and supporters will be handing out orange arm-bands at big concerts like Home-Bake next Saturday ( December 3) and The Big Day Out at the end of January.
Download this short award-winning filmThe union is also taking out ads at Home-Bake pointing young people to the LHMU website where they can download an award-winning short comic – 36 Ways to Get Fired Thanks to John Howard .Unions NSW leader, John Robertson, praised the LHMU for this initiative saying it is important that unions go out to the music festivals to warn young people looking for summer jobs about the potential new rip-offs. Annie Owens, LHMU NSW Secretary, said LHMU as the big hospitality union, can see how the new Howard laws will give unscrupulous bosses the opportunity to rip off young workers.
Forced to live off tips“ Already the restaurant trade is plotting how they can force their workers to live not off decent wages – but just tips.“ They want to Americanise our hospitality industry forcing people to forget their self-respect and beg for dollars from their customers. “ That’s an ugly look – but that is exactly what is planned by key leaders in the hospitality industry.”
