Hundreds Rally Against PM in Nowra

Date: 24 April 2006

Protesters face Howard

Protesters face Howard

The Prime Minister John Howard was met by around 200 Shoalhaven protesters this morning demanding that his government abandon its anti worker laws or the people of Shoalhaven will abandon his government.

Among the protesters were members of the Zamani and Lucas families hard hit by Howard's new laws.

Arthur Rorris, South Coast Labour Council Secretary said,

"Its appalling to think that Howard came to Nowra to celebrate 10 years in power but could not spare 5 minutes to hear the stories of two local families suffering under the new workplace laws."

"Kashayar Zamani wanted to tell the Prime Minister about how his employer managed to insure that the employer's wife would become the beneficiary in the event of the workers death, instead of his mother."

"The Lucas family like many others in the Shoalhaven have seen their children leave the region to gain work, given the high unemployment of the area.

"As it happened the job in Sydney resulted in dismissal for 'operational reasons' two days after the WorkChoice law came into effect."

On a lighter note the crowd was entertained with the arrival of a gentleman by the name of Sir D.R. Sole dressed in top hat and tails, who arrived on a slave drawn buggy.

Sole waved to the Prime Minister as he rode past and thanked him for his new Workplace laws which have made it cheaper for him to have workers pull his buggy instead of horses.

Unfortunately Sir D.R. Sole was denied entry to the function with the Prime Minister despite his claim that he had spent millions of dollars "propping him up".
