Bank Action Moves to Sydney's WestDate: 04 July 2001
Finance Sector Union members from ANZ, the National Australia Bank and Westpac banks in Western Sydney will participate in a stop work meeting at Penrith as part of the Union's campaign of rolling action to achieve improved staffing, reasonable workloads and fair pay increases. 'Following successful action last week in Newcastle the campaign moves to Western Sydney', said FSU NSW/ACT Branch Secretary Geoff Derrick. 'Union members will add their voices to the chorus of discontent at the Banks' failure to deliver decent service standards for customers and fair working conditions for staff' he said. Some 33 branches of ANZ, the National and Westpac in Western Sydney will be affected by the stoppage. The Union has received strong feedback from bank customers, who have been overwhelmingly supportive of the action. 'We are grateful to the community who have been extremely supportive of this campaign', Mr. Derrick said 'I think people understand that the aim of this campaign is to improve service standards for customers, as much as working conditions for bank workers' 'FSU members are constantly frustrated by their inability to deliver customers the levels of service they would like to - because the banks are understaffing branches, and putting intense pressure on staff to meet unrealistic sales targets' 'The banks are more interested in profit than customer service - they refuse to acknowledge that customers and staff are angry.'
