Parental Leave for Casuals Extended

Date: 05 July 2001

The Carr Government has extended unpaid parental leave to casual workers who have been with the same employer for at least a year.

Minister for Industrial Relations, John Della Bosca, said the legislation passed the Upper House of State Parliament last night.

"Parental leave for casuals was first introduced by this Government in October last year. This legislation reduces required length of service from 24 to 12 months, in line with requirements for full-time and part-time workers.

"It's estimated that there are more than 453,000 casuals working in New South Wales. Women make up the majority and most have worked for the same employer for 12 months or more," said Mr Della Bosca.

"Parental leave is available to both men and women and provides for up to 12 months unpaid leave to look after babies up to one year old.

"Workers shouldn't be forced to resign because of parental responsibilities.

"NSW employers will benefit by retaining the experience and skills of an employee returning to work after parental leave," said Mr Della Bosca.

"Employment status should not be the only criteria that grants some workers an entitlement, while denying others a benefit that many of us take for granted."
