Cleaners pester Hobart CouncilDate: 02 November 2006
Tasmanian cleaners today took spare phones to the Town Hall because they are still waiting for the Council to respond to a letter hand delivered on October 18th. LHMU State Secretary David O'Byrne said members were disappointed they had not yet received so much as a phone call in response to a letter issued to Lord Mayor Rob Valentine last month asking council to get on board the campaign. "Our call on the Mayor comes after an initial meeting with Hobart City Council in October to discuss the rights of workers who clean the council buildings," Mr O'Byrne said. "Council's responded that as they did not employ the cleaners they did not see they had any role in the campaign." Mr O'Byrne said the LHMU had subsequently made a second appeal to Lord Mayor Valentine to get on board the Clean Start campaign and ensure the basic workplace rights of the Town Hall's cleaners. "We have had no response from the Lord Mayor to date and our members are asking Hobart City Council to call them with an explanation," Mr O'Byrne said. "Our message to council is that while they're tucked up in their beds, these hidden workers who clean council's toilets and empty their bins, deserve decent jobs that are well paid, safe and which give cleaners enough time to do their job."
