Health Dept Building Sick?

Date: 07 November 2006

Wearing chemical suits, gas masks and lab coats Sydney cleaners and their supporters will be outside a major North Sydney office block today ( November 7) warning that we are of the view that Health Department workers may be at risk because of low standards.

"The Department of Health is a major tenant and we are concerned that poor cleaning standards could affect their health." Luke Whitington of the Clean Start; Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign said.

Date: November 7 2006

Time: 12.30 pm

Place: 73 Miller St, North Sydney

Union members campaigning for decent working standards to ensure quality cleaning will call today for Workcover to investigate the office block which is cleaned by a major contract cleaning company GLAD.

The Clean Start: Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign is part of a global movement to deliver decency for commercial office cleaners.

Launched in Australia in April it has seen an upsurge of workplace action by cleaners in the cities across the nation as they demand better job rights and decent working conditions.

In October on International Anti-Poverty Day, nearly 2000 cleaners across the country marched in capital cities demanding an end to their poverty-trap jobs.
