Jervis Bay – Howard’s First ReactorDate: 23 November 2006
The South Coast Labour Council today warned that the Federal Government had only one real option for a nuclear reactor site on the eastern seaboard, after the States ruled themselves out - Commonwealth territory at Jervis Bay. South Coast Labour Council Secretary, Arthur Rorris, said: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jervis_Bay_Nuclear_Power_Plant (for reference) "The State Governments have said "not in my backyard", that leaves Howard only one option, Commonwealth territory that he controls on the eastern seaboard." "The problem is that Jervis Bay, whilst Commonwealth territory, is also the backyard for many South Coast residents and as we saw at Chernobyl, deadly cancer causing radiation doesn't respect state or even national borders." "We are still going through the pain and heartache left behind by the asbestos industry, thousands of dead and dying workers and other members of the community. Why would we even think about going nuclear with the potential risks being many time greater? "Joanna Gash, the local member, and Howard I am sure will deny it and say that it will never be built here, just as they said they will 'never, ever' introduce a GST." "If they are serious about building nuclear reactors and if this is not just another distraction from the mess they have created with their extreme workplace laws and the quagmire in Iraq, they will start with the easiest option, land they control."
